Self Reflection

Over the last couple of months I worked with a coach on a self reflection technique called ‘Document Creation’.

This is a popular practice in coaching circles and involves writing a new narrative for your life. It’s like creating a personal Mission Statement.

I had already taken myself through a similar process for healing my past, and was powerful. I wanted to make sure I had a good technique for being the best version of myself in the present.

For a few weeks we looked at my limiting beliefs and found profound positive truths to replace them with. Next, I put the statements into a logical order.

When I was happy with the Document, I recorded it into my phone. You can read the final version below.

My task now is to commit it to memory. So I am listening to it daily, reading it aloud and sharing it with people.

What I am finding is that each day a particular phrase will stand out to me. I question if I am really living it and it serves as a reminder of who I intend to be. One day while I was losing patience with my dog as she sniffed the 1000th blade of grass. I was challenged by hearing my own voice say the words “I am loving and gentle with my dog and cats.”

Sometimes I feel a connection with the phrase and it feels like an affirmation of how I am living, such as “I was wonderfully made to connect deeply with other souls and help them heal.” One of the hats I wear as a coach is “Trauma Informed Coach.”

Other times I suddenly have a deeper understanding of a phrase. It has a greater impact on me because it acts as an inspiration for me to extend myself. For example “Who I am being creates my relationships” revealed to me that I am not only creating my relationships in the present. I’m also laying a foundation for my old age, as well as for how my children and future generations will speak about me.

My invitation to you is to consider who you are being at home, at work and in all the other places and situations in your life. I’d love to hear what you think about this kind of self reflection. And if you want to explore this subject more, I would be happy to hear from you.
